OUR STORY
Our company North 44° Land Design Inc. was cultivated during a four month trip around South America. Inspired by the city where we practice, Toronto’s latitude position, and symbolically important, the name North 44° is an ode to where it all began, at a latitude position of South44°, in the Patagonian region of Southern Argentina.
After graduating university, we gathered the essentials (camera, passport, underwear, and gastric meds) filled our backpacks, and took off to the alluring and fascinating continent of South America to expand our knowledge and appreciation of great landscapes. Our great adventure took us up the coast of Brazil, to the majestic forests and walled cities of Colombia, to the mountains and highlands of Peru, to the great salares of Bolivia, and finally ending in the remote and pristine Patagonia, Southern Argentina.
What was originally scheduled to be a two week tour of the country turned into a 10 week volunteering stay in the Lake District on a rural organic farm turned adventure lodge/spa that focuses on promoting sustainable living and integrating its guests with nature’s processes. During our stay, we were immersed in the challenging but immensely rewarding endeavour of growing food. It was an enriching and humbling experience, to say the least, and we returned home with a sincere and newfound appreciation for the processes involved in getting food to our tables.
We learned how to work the land -a respectful and reciprocal relationship of taking and giving back- and with this became inextricably linked to nature’s processes.
Unbeknownst to us, the 10 weeks on the farm would form the foundation of our company; a strong and resilient working relationship, and a vision to become entrepreneurs in our field of landscape design.
We developed a great relationship with the farm owners and during our stay, we were asked to prepare a design for an interactive garden that would provide sensory and educational experiences for guests of the farm. A kitchen garden, butterfly garden, extensive herb and perennial beds, and a yoga and meditation area were all incorporated into the design.
Upon returning home, we invested all of our abundant energy and free time in starting our company.
